If you’re looking for a little flavor from south of the border, you may want to give Don Pedros Restaurant a try.
With local locations in both Washington City and St. George, Don Pedro’s restaurant is a family Mexican restaurant with a wide range of cuisine. Wide enough that the menu can feel a little daunting at first.
First time to Don Pedros Restaurant
Settling into Don Pedros Restaurant with a group of friends, each took a turn commenting on the number of options. As is the case with most Mexican restaurants, the same few ingredients comprise nearly all the menu items, but in a seemingly endless number of combinations.
Several of the menu items at Don Pedros Restaurant are featured with photographs on the menu. For me, that helps in narrowing things down at an unfamiliar restaurant.
Start your meal with super nachos or spicy queso dip from the appetizer section. Or try a lighter start with one of several soups or salads. One friend ordered the shrimp taco salad featuring sautéed shrimp, lettuce, cheese and tomatoes. I contemplated the tortilla soup and the fajita salad. Both likely great Don Pedro’s Restaurant offerings, but in the end I went another direction. Classic tacos. One shredded chicken, one shredded beef.
The Don Pedros Restaurant experience
The parking lot at the Don Pedros Restaurant in Washington City was crowded during the noon hour, but inside the restaurant it felt like we had the place to ourselves. This could be because the Don Pedros Restaurant dining area is divided into two sections. And the tables are spaced far enough apart that you don’t feel like you are eating in someone else’s lap.
The key, for any Mexican restaurant, is the free chips and salsa. Don Pedros restaurant does this part up right, adding bean dip, as well as salsa to the complementary pre-meal nosh.
The service was prompt but not overbearing. The food prepared quickly. As it turned out, my choice of two tacos was the daily special and so it came with a drink, along with a platter of Spanish rice and refried beans.
The brightly colored walls, large, seemingly authentic Mexican wall hangings all contributed to the overall experience at Don Pedros Restaurant.

A little Don Pedros Restaurant history
The original Don Pedro’s Restaurant opened in 1995 in Evanston, Wyoming. The brainchild of Pedro P Mena and his wife Lupita, they were supported by their brothers and children. Locally, the Pico Sanchez family, according to Don Pedro’s Restaurant web site, manages the restaurants.
Touting a menu consisting of “original family-created recipes that locals love and crave,” Don Pedros Restaurant also offers a full selection of cocktails. Plus they are open 7 days a week.
There are a lot of options in southern Utah when it comes to Mexican cuisine. But Don Pedro’s restaurant is excited to be part of that culinary landscape.
