Mad Pita St George | Mediterranean taste

When it comes to Mediterranean food, it’s never been at the top of my radar for restaurant selection. But after hearing the feverish praise so many people have to offer for Mad Pita St George, I figured it was time to give this place a try.

Greek to me

If you’re among the lesser-traveled portion of the local population, you might have a similar question as the following: What is Greek food all about anyway? What makes it stand out? What are they known for serving? How can you best introduce your taste buds to this new dining experience?

According to PitaJungle.com, Mediterranean food technically includes staple dishes from European countries including Greece, Italy and Spain. It also includes dishes from North African countries like Algeria, Libya and Morocco. And Middle Eastern Countries such as Leganon, Syria and Turkey.

An article in EatingWell.com points out that key ingredients found in Mediterranean food include olive oil, fresh fruits and vegetables, legumes, fish whole grains, and moderate amounts of wine and red meat.

Sounds like a pretty healthy diet.

Perhaps we’ve stumbled on one reason for the popularity of places like Mad Pita St George.

Mad Pita St George

I can’t quite tell if the general interest in Mad Pita St George is because of an innate love the people of Southern Utah have for Greek cuisine, or simply because it is unique for the area. I mean, you can get a burger and fries at dozens of locations. But where else can you get a gyro?

Located at 2376 Red Cliffs Drive in St. George, Mad Pita St George can satiate your appetite for gyros, as well as pita bread, salads, kabobs and more.

After revealing myself as a Mad Pita St George neophyte to the friendly woman at the counter, I told her I would have to take her word on what I should order. I’m glad I did.

The spicy chicken gyro with French fries on the side was just the thing.

As one in my dining party pointed out, the gyro is like the hamburger of Greek food. So it was definitely the best entry point for a newbie like me.

According to a review on Spectrum Media web site, Mad Pita St George has one of the best gyros outside of New York City. Another review calls it, “the best gyro ever!”

Other menu options

Let’s say you’re not a Greek food beginner like me. Well, it seems the rest of the Mad Pita St George menu has what you need too. From falafel pita combos to gorgonzola salad, there’s plenty to try. One of the classic Mediterranean food options, Grape Leaves, are available filled with rice and spices, making it a perfect vegetarian option. Or you might like the fish platter, featuring tilapia with tomato-parsley mix, serve with rice pilaf. Or how about a gluten-free pizza?
