George Streetfest is back

Once a month, downtown St. George shuts down to the usual traffic and opens for another kind: George Streetfest.

Featuring live music, business vendors and local food, George Streetfest is a way to relax, unwind and have fun with the St. George community.

Back again

Answering the call for more downtown nightlife, George Streetfest is back for another year.

After some consideration to the economic feasibility of a year-round George Streetfest, festival coordinators decided to shorten the season. Turning it into a March through October George Streetfest allows event planners to pack more into each event.

Anyone who attended the recent George Streetfest can attest — it is bigger than before. More food. Additional entertainment. More music.

The April 6 George Streetfest heralded in the spring season — enhanced by plenty of out-of-towners visiting the area’s warmer climes for spring break.

Headlining the event on the music main stage for April 6 was Hurricane-based rock band, Raven Cain.  Scattered throughout downtown St. George there were many other musicians as well. Some playing acoustic sets in the family fun zone. Others jamming in the Desert Pulse Jazz Garden.

Some of the other recognizable musical acts included Clinton Norman, Bailey Carter, Red Rock Strings and Jim Sevy’s Jazz Band.

What George Streetfest offers

Thanks to promotion on social media, as well as traditional media, along with word of mouth, the turnout to last weekend’s George Streetfest was strong. George Streetfest begins at 6 p.m., drawing crowds of families looking for something to do on a Friday night. As the evening wears on, the crowd transitions into a slightly older clientele. Usually this crowd is enticed by the live music, and the beer garden.

There has been some concern about the number of unsupervised teens at George Streetfest, however. An article published in February of this year on the George Streetfest web site said, the City of St. George was still willing to back the George Streetfest event if the unsupervised teen problem was resolved.

No news yet as to whether the City of St. George felt the problem was sufficiently attended to.

Looking ahead

With six more George Streetfest events scheduled in 2018, the party on St. George Main Street is just getting started.

The Stapley Family Fun Zone continues to be a draw for family patrons. Within the parking lot area near the St. George Carousel and the Town Square, families can participate in several activities. A giant bungee trampoline, bounce houses, vendor booths and music.

Head over to Chef Hog Food Truck Row for great food optoins. Mexican cuisine, churros, pizza, hot dogs, corn dogs and more — it’s always more fun to eat as you stroll.

Each upcoming George Streetfest has a theme. The April event was “No Foolin’.” The remaining year’s theme and schedule includes:

May 4: Cinco de Mayo and Iron StreetFest

June 1: Moonlight Madness and Glow Run

July 6: Independence Day celebration and fireworks

Aug. 3: Islands celebration and luau

Sept. 7: Cowboy Country Jam

Oct. 5: Oktoberfest and Art Show
