Rainfall St George is back

For an area that is typically known for its hot, dry climate, winter rainfall St George is a surprise to a lot of people. Sure, rainfall St George is not too common, but it does happen. And it is usually in the winter months. Like today’s drizzly rainfall St George day.

Rainfall St George

According to the Western Regional Climate Center report recording data from 1829 to 2005, St. George receives an average of 8.25 inches of precipitation annually. The majority of that precipitation comes as rainfall St George. And, according to the data, the bulk of that rainfall St George comes in January and February.

Of course, that’s not the only precipitation St. George receives. Sometimes, it even snows.

According to the St. George Chamber of Commerce web site, this area general receives 2.7 inches of snow per year. It’s not much, and it doesn’t always stick, but when it does it creates quite a stir.

Snow days

Back in 2013, the rainfall St George turned to snow — and then stayed as snow for several days.

Low clouds hang over St. George during rainy day in January 2019.

Referenced as the “most severe winter weather the region has seen in living memory,” by an article in St. George News, the storm in December 2013 took everyone by surprise. Not only did the rainfall St George turn to snow, temperatures stayed below or near freezing for three or four days. It was a sight to see with palm tree fronds bowing under the weight of the unfamiliar white stuff. And children ill-equipped for such winter playtime coming up with some creative configurations of makeshift winter apparel.

The National Weather Service said that if the temperature really did reach zero degrees (as was reported in several places) then this was the coldest St. George had been since the record of minus 11 was set in January 1937.

Those records, were not official, however, because the National Weather Service doesn’t have an official weather station in the area.

Residents still recall the strangeness of driving to work with ice on the roads even days after the storm.

School’s out

One group who certainly aren’t complaining about a little rainfall St George when it turns to snow are the students and teachers in Washington County. In fact, when the rainfall St George even has a slight chance of turning to snow, they’re crossing their fingers for a snow day.

According to the Washington County School District web site, the policy for delay starts and weather-related school closures includes a plan for snow, ice or flooding conditions. Such determinations will be made by 5:30 a.m. with media notifications by 6 a.m. The decision will be based on whether the routes are safe to transport students by normal routes to and from school. The determination is made after the director of transportation has been in touch with the county roads department. Naturally the main concern of all involved is the safety of the students.

Desert rain

While some might consider the winter rainfall St George as a cramp in the usual outdoorsy St. George lifestyle, it can be a welcome contrast to the otherwise picturesque blue skies. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, and all that.

Plus, in the desert especially, rainfall St George, and the occasional snow fall is essential to life when St. George turns back into the hot, dry, desert so many people have come to love.
