Shaved Ice St George | cool down treats

This time of year, no one is going to argue with the statement that St. George is hot! But there are a few different views on the best ways to cool off. One of the tastiest, is by indulging in one of the many shaved ice St George stands.

Shaved Ice St George | A definition

Cool and refreshing treat
Shaved ice St George offers a cool, refreshing treat.

There are many variations when it comes to shaved ice treats. The most common that might come to mind is a snow cone. Think back to your days at the county fair or something. But these days, the definition is more specific. Shaved Ice St George, or shaved ice regardless of geographic location, actually means any ice-based dessert created by shaving a block of ice. Its not crushed ice like a snow cone. A true connoisseur can tell the difference.

Shaved Ice St George

Cool and refreshing. Sweet and crunchy. Colorful and fun. There are plenty of reasons to try shaved ice St George. The question is, which one? There is some argument as to what constitutes an official shaved ice St George stand. This list is not meant to be inclusive, but should give you some idea as to where to start in your search for the perfect shaved ice St George.

Hokulia Shave Ice

295 N. Main, Cedar City

446 S. Mall Drive, St. George

20 N. Bluff Street, St. George

In our experience, if you’re looking for quantity, as well as quality, you can’t go wrong with Hokulia Shave Ice. They have locations in St. George and Cedar City. And you can get sizes that range from “kiddie” to what we call, “bigger than your head.”

The actual sizes are Short Board (small), Long Board (medium) and Big Kahuna (Large). Kids’ size is available upon request, though for some reason it is not mentioned on the shaved ice St George menu board.

Whatever combination you can imagine.
Combinations like half fruit punch, half grape are available.

Billing themselves as “authentic Hawaiian,” the menu features soft shaved ice that is “fluffy as snow” dowsed in one or more of the 50 flavors available. Plus, at this shaved ice St George shop, you can add a few things to make it even yummier. For example, a scoop of ice cream in the middle of the ribbon-thin ice; or give it a “snow cap” by adding sweet and condensed milk to the top, or topping with coconut flakes, Li Hing Mui Powder or sour spray.

Some of the most popular flavors include Tigers Blood, Rainbow and other combinations. One of the nice things at this shaved ice St. George is the menu suggestion for various combinations to try.

Zeppes Italian Ice

1013 E. 700 South, St. George

Once located on Sunset Boulevard in St. George, Zeppes Italian Ice is now located a little more centrally, on 700 South. The unique aspect to Zeppes is the combination of Italian Ice layered with frozen custard. You can add vanilla ice cream to any of the fruity flavors of Italian ice. Or, chocolate custard with certain ice flavors makes for an even more unique taste.

The custard is unbelievably creamy. Delicious. If you don’t want the ice cream and Italian ice separated, you can have it all blended together to create a shake.

Or, just try the custard on its own. With that additional offering, Zeppes falls into the category of Shaved Ice St George spots, as well as a great place for ice cream. A topic for another time.

Kilo’s Italian Ice

511 E. St. George Blvd., St. George

Recently reopened under new management, Kilo’s Italian Ice is a great shaved ice St George option in the center of town. You can order small, regular, large or Kilo To Go sizes. They offer Italian soda flavors including peach, vanilla, mango, lime, cherry, coconut, pomegranate, and strawberry. But they also have traditional shaved ice flavors as well.

At this shaved ice St George stand you can order things “drenched” for an extra 79 cents, layered for 99 cents or with toppings including Fruity Pebbles, whipped cream, chocolate or caramel.

That’s a lot of possibilities.

Tiki Shack

150 N. Main, Cedar City

Although Tiki Shack doesn’t yet have a St. George location it is worth mentioning because of its popularity. It’s less expensive than some versions, and it has a lot of juicy flavoring.

Plus, in addition to the fluffy shaved ice, Tiki Shack has some other special things to offer. You can add coconut cream to the top to change the flavor up a bit. You can add ice cream to the bottom or middle.

It’s billed as “gourmet shaved ice.” Plus, the wait isn’t generally very long.
